Sweet Izzy's Ice Cream & Coffee

I have to admit, the first thing that got me about Sweet Izzy's is the story behind it. Chapin had been needing an ice cream shop for a long time, and a lot of people around here said it out loud for years. Then Sweet Izzy's showed up in the J.R. Cash center on Lexington Avenue, and it is exactly the kind of place you hope it will be. Pastel walls, a display case full of color, candy jars on the counter, the whole thing. It feels less like a chain and more like somebody's idea of what a sweet shop ought to look like.

It is family-owned, and you can tell in how the place is run. There are 32 flavors of hard-scooped ice cream, which is a real number and not a marketing one. Soft serve too, plus shakes, sundaes, floats, and coffee and lattes for the adults who got dragged in on the promise of ice cream and secretly wanted caffeine. Pastries and baked goods, cookies, chocolates, candy. And they do kids' birthday parties, which I do not mind telling you, makes the grandparents in my client list very happy. You can see them planning the next one before the first one is over.

It is open seven days a week, which is a bigger deal than it sounds for a small-town sweet shop. They open early on weekdays for the coffee crowd and stay open into the evening for the dessert crowd. The staff is patient with the whole process of choosing from 32 flavors, you know? Nobody rushes you. And they are careful about allergies, which matters to the families I work with who are new to the area and just trying to figure out where their kids can actually go.

The locals have been loud about this one since it opened. "Truly the best ice cream in town" is the kind of thing people actually say about it, and they do not say it politely, they say it like they are defending a position. It has become one of those places that makes Chapin feel like Chapin. Which, honestly, is the whole reason I do this spotlight every week. Good small businesses are what make a town feel like home, and Sweet Izzy's is doing its part.
