Higher Ground

Chapin, SC

Owned by Andrew and Kim Babcock

I have told you before that I am picky about a burger. That has not changed. But what I have learned since I started this spotlight series is that the best local places are rarely just about the food. They are about the people behind it, the story that got them there, and what keeps them going when things get hard. Higher Ground on Chapin Road is a perfect example of that.

Let me tell you about the Babcocks. Andrew served as General Manager at Higher Ground since March of 2024. He knew the place inside and out, knew the food, knew the customers, knew what worked and what did not. Then in April of 2025, he and his wife Kim made the leap. They bought the place. Kim left a 13-year career in the medical field to support their dream of owning a restaurant together. That is not a small thing. Thirteen years is a long time in any field, and walking away from that kind of stability to bet on yourselves takes a rare kind of courage.

Since taking over, they have been quietly investing in the place. New fryers, new ice machines, improved AC, the kind of stuff customers may not notice right away but that makes a real difference in how the food comes out and how the staff can work. They kept the same vendors and the same menu items people already love, because they understood that the food was not broken and did not need fixing. What they added was their own energy and their own standard of hospitality.

This is a couple who put everything on the line for something they believe in. That is the kind of story I will always get behind.

The Menu

What to Order

The menu at Higher Ground is the kind you want to work through methodically. Fresh craft burgers built with quality beef, flavorful wings with sauces that actually have personality, seafood dishes that hold their own next to the beef, hand-breaded onion rings that arrive at the table golden and shatteringly crisp, and homemade hush puppies that remind you why homemade always wins.

I have my favorites. The Big Fat Greek Flip is something else, I will tell you that. It is one of those burgers that sounds like it should not work on paper and then takes you completely by surprise. And the Creeky Rocky Burger has become my go-to when I want something hearty and familiar but a little elevated. Both of them are built by people who care about what they are making, and you can taste it.

These are foodies running the kitchen. They want your meal to be the best thing you have eaten all week, and they put in the work to make sure it is.

The Vibe

The Atmosphere

Walking into Higher Ground feels like walking into a place that has been part of the neighborhood for years, even if you have never been there before. It is family-friendly in the best sense, not just tolerant of kids but genuinely set up for them. The outdoor area is a big part of the draw, with plenty of space for little ones to move around and for the family dog to come along too.

There is room for everyone here. Couples on a date night, groups of friends catching up over wings and beers, families with kids who have just finished a game or practice. It is the kind of comfortable, low-key atmosphere that makes you want to stay a little longer than you planned. They are open daily for lunch and dinner, which means you have no excuse not to find a time that works for you.

Their Philosophy

Be nice and genuine to people. Create food that is worth getting off the couch and driving for. Appreciate the people who walk through your door.

That is the whole vibe at Higher Ground. No pretense. No shortcuts. Just honest food made by people who genuinely care about the people they are serving. That is rare, and it is worth driving for.
